Ériu is an Irish goddess who literally gave Ireland its name. "Éire" (Ireland in Gaelic) comes directly from her. She was part of the Tuatha Dé Danann and had two sisters, Banba and Fódla, who also have their names attached to Ireland.
The most famous story about Ériu involves the Milesians showing up in Ireland. When they arrived, Ériu and her sisters met them and basically made a deal: name the island after us and you can have sovereignty over it. Ériu's name stuck, and that's how Ireland got its name.
It’s hard to do justice to the Irish landscape in black and white, so this is a rare foray into color.
